Sapphire Pressure Window Overview

Sapphire Pressure Windows are high-strength optical windows manufactured from single-crystal sapphire (Al₂O₃) for optical systems operating under elevated pressure, mechanical loading and harsh environmental conditions.

Single-crystal sapphire combines excellent hardness, high mechanical strength, good optical transmission, and strong thermal and chemical stability, making it suitable for demanding protective optical applications. For sapphire pressure windows, optical specifications alone are not sufficient to determine the appropriate window dimensions — required thickness and edge geometry depend on the actual mechanical loading and installation conditions.

Final pressure capability should be evaluated based on window dimensions, thickness, unsupported aperture, sapphire orientation, mounting structure, sealing method, temperature, pressure conditions, and required safety factor. A pressure rating should not be assigned from material strength alone.

Chenyu Optics manufactures custom sapphire pressure windows with controlled diameter, thickness, surface quality, flatness, and edge geometry. UV, VIS, NIR, and application-specific IR anti-reflection coatings can be applied according to the required operating wavelength.

Sapphire Pressure Window vs Borosilicate Glass Window

Property Sapphire Pressure Window Borosilicate Glass Window
Mechanical Strength High mechanical strength suited to elevated pressure and mechanical loading Lower mechanical strength; typically limited to moderate pressure applications
Hardness & Scratch Resistance Excellent hardness and scratch resistance Comparatively lower hardness and more susceptible to surface damage
Thermal & Chemical Stability Strong thermal and chemical stability for harsh environments Generally stable but less resistant than sapphire in demanding conditions
Optical Transmission UV through NIR and into selected IR wavelengths Primarily visible and near-infrared transmission
Typical Applications Underwater imaging, pressure vessels, sensor housings, harsh-environment systems General-purpose viewing ports and lower-pressure protective windows

Important Considerations for Sapphire Pressure Windows

Optical specifications alone are not sufficient to determine the appropriate window dimensions.
Required thickness and edge geometry depend on the actual mechanical loading and installation conditions.
Pressure direction (one-sided or differential), mounting and sealing method should be specified.
Operating temperature, operating medium and required safety factor or applicable standard should be reviewed.
A pressure rating should not be assigned from material strength alone.

Sapphire Pressure Window FAQ

Why is sapphire suitable for pressure windows?

Sapphire combines high mechanical strength, excellent hardness, thermal stability, and optical transmission, making it suitable for optical windows exposed to pressure and demanding environments.

How thick should a sapphire pressure window be?

The required thickness depends on window diameter, unsupported aperture, pressure differential, mounting method, operating temperature, and required safety factor. These conditions should be evaluated before the final thickness is specified.

Can sapphire pressure windows be used underwater?

Yes. Sapphire is suitable for many underwater optical applications because of its mechanical strength, hardness, and environmental stability. The complete window and housing design must still be evaluated for the required operating depth and pressure.

Can AR coatings be applied to sapphire pressure windows?

Yes. UV, VIS, NIR, and selected IR AR coatings can be applied according to the operating wavelength and environmental requirements.

Can the dimensions and optical specifications be customized?

Yes. Chenyu Optics can customize diameter, thickness, clear aperture, edge geometry, surface specifications, and coating according to the optical and mechanical requirements.

What information should I provide for a quotation?

Please provide window diameter or overall dimensions, clear aperture, required thickness if already defined, working pressure and maximum pressure, pressure direction, mounting and sealing method, unsupported aperture, operating temperature range, operating medium, required safety factor or applicable standard, operating wavelength range, surface flatness and quality, AR coating requirement, and quantity.
