Half-Ball Dome
Half-Ball Domes are precision hemispherical optical components designed for compact optical assemblies and protective applications. Their true hemispherical geometry provides high optical transmission, mechanical durability and thermal stability while maintaining a compact form factor.
Half-Ball Dome Overview
Half-Ball Domes are precision protective optical components manufactured from high-purity fused silica (SiO₂). The material provides excellent ultraviolet transmission, low optical absorption and stable performance across UV, visible and near-infrared wavelengths.
Available materials include sapphire, fused silica, zinc sulfide (ZnS), zinc selenide (ZnSe) and silicon, enabling designs for UV, visible, NIR, MWIR and LWIR wavelength ranges.
Chenyu Optics manufactures custom half-ball domes according to customer drawings, including customized material, diameter, dome height, surface accuracy, surface quality and AR coatings.

Half-Ball Dome FAQ
What is a half-ball dome used for?
A half-ball dome protects sensitive optical assemblies while maintaining high transmission and stable performance in laser, UV imaging, sensing and precision optical systems.
Why is fused silica suitable for optical domes?
Fused silica offers excellent ultraviolet transmission, very low thermal expansion, low optical absorption, high laser damage resistance and outstanding optical stability.
Are half-ball domes suitable for laser applications?
Yes. Fused silica is widely used in laser systems because of its high laser damage threshold, low absorption and excellent thermal stability. The exact material grade and coating should be selected according to the laser wavelength and power.
Can half-ball domes be customized?
Yes. Chenyu Optics provides customized diameters, dome shapes, curvature, wall thickness, surface accuracy, surface quality and UV, VIS or NIR AR coating solutions.
