Half-Ball Dome FAQ

What is a half-ball dome used for?

A half-ball dome protects sensitive optical assemblies while maintaining high transmission and stable performance in laser, UV imaging, sensing and precision optical systems.

Why is fused silica suitable for optical domes?

Fused silica offers excellent ultraviolet transmission, very low thermal expansion, low optical absorption, high laser damage resistance and outstanding optical stability.

Are half-ball domes suitable for laser applications?

Yes. Fused silica is widely used in laser systems because of its high laser damage threshold, low absorption and excellent thermal stability. The exact material grade and coating should be selected according to the laser wavelength and power.

Can half-ball domes be customized?

Yes. Chenyu Optics provides customized diameters, dome shapes, curvature, wall thickness, surface accuracy, surface quality and UV, VIS or NIR AR coating solutions.

Handling & Manufacturing Notes

Avoid impact or excessive pressure on polished optical surfaces.
Protect AR-coated surfaces from scratches, fingerprints and contamination.
Select the coating according to the operating wavelength and application.
Consider thermal load and laser power during optical system design.
Use approved optical cleaning materials and procedures.
Specify dome geometry, tolerances and clear aperture on the drawing.
