A Dispersion Prism, also called a Dispersive Prism, is an optical element designed to separate a beam of polychromatic light into its individual spectral components.
This is achieved by utilizing the material’s dispersion property, where the refractive index varies with wavelength.
When white light passes through the prism, different wavelengths bend at different angles, creating a visible spectrum.
The coated prism is used to deviate the line of sight by 60°.

How do Dispersive Prisms work?
A dispersive prism works based on two optical principles: refraction and dispersion.
- Refraction
When light enters a prism, it slows down.
This causes the light to bend at the boundary between air and the prism.
The same happens again when light exits the prism, bending once more.
- Dispersion
Also, the refractive index of the prism material is wavelength-dependent.
Shorter wavelengths (blue/violet light) → refract (bend) more strongly.
Longer wavelengths (red light) → refract less.
- Output Spectrum
The result is a fan-shaped spectrum, with red light deviating the least and violet light deviating the most.
