What is a Ge Prism?

The Ge prism is a high-precision optical component which is often used in infrared (IR) applications.

The refractive index of germanium is 4.0 and its critical angle is only 14.5 degrees. Therefore, it is good for the refraction and propagation of light.

With excellent transmission in the 2–14 µm wavelength range and a high refractive index (~4.0), people often use them in infrared imaging, spectroscopy, thermal cameras, and laser systems.

And due to their outstanding durability and well optical performance, Germanium prisms are a preferred choice for IR optical designs.
